Winter Reading Challenge

January 1 – 31, 2024
Explore topics like family, history, and identity this winter!

From January 1-31, Loutit District Library is participating in “Where We Come From,” a reading challenge sponsored by Lerner. 📖

Every person has a rich history and unique stories to tell — dive deeper into your own this winter! Explore topics like family, history, and identity while reading Where We Come From, a poetic picture book for all ages written by John Coy, Shannon Gibney, Sun Yung Shin, and Diane Wilson and illustrated by Dion MBD. Log your reading minutes and reflect on your own story — all while earning badges on your virtual bingo card!

We challenge our community to read and log at least 180 minutes (3 hours) during the challenge. For logging your minutes read and completing fun activities, you will earn badges that feature some of the beautiful artwork from the book itself. Feel free to participate using the Beanstack app or with a paper reading log and don’t forget to earn BINGO! ✨

Get one bingo to earn your choice between a handcrafted bath bomb or an LDL campfire mug! Earn all the badges on your bingo card to be entered into the Grand Prize drawing. 🗳️ Keep reading to learn more about our grand prizes. The top-performing libraries and schools will earn special prizes sponsored by Lerner, including special shoutouts and even signed copies of the book. Happy reading!

The Basics

Log your reading and activities to earn badges throughout the challenge. Each minute of reading gets you closer to a badge which will help you reach bingo. Any type of reading counts for your minutes. You can read a magazine, eBook, graphic novel, or newspaper or listen to an audiobook! It’s that simple!

Not sure what to read? Check out Where We Come From, the picture book that inspired this challenge! After that, try one of the books on our digital and physical displays or ask for a recommendation from a library staff member (You could earn a badge!).

Earn Prizes

Earn bingo by receiving four consecutive badges horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. You only need one bingo to receive your finisher prize: your choice between a handcrafted bath bomb or an LDL campfire mug! Finisher prizes will be available on Monday, January 8, at the Youth Services and Reference & Information desks.

Earn every badge and complete your bingo board to be entered into our grand prize drawings. Grand prize winners will be contacted by Friday, February 2.

We have two grand prize bundles to give away. Each bundle includes a sherpa throw blanket, a 500-piece puzzle featuring a photo of the library, 2 Free Drink coupons to Aldea Coffee, a $20 gift card to the Bookman, a $20 gift card to Grand Haven 9, and all of the goodies come in a Grand Haven-themed canvas bag from Marüshka!
